Mount Osore and Hotoke-ga-ura, Shimokita Peninsula, Aomori

Mount Osore

Mount Osore is the name of a Buddhist temple and folk religion pilgrimage destination in the center of the remote Shimokita Peninsula of Aomori.  The temple is located in the caldera of an active volcano and is believed in Japanese mythology to be one of the gates to the underworld.  There are some streams of hot water and smoking stones.

It is not easy to get there, but if you have a chance to visit Aomori, this is one of the places to go.  The temple has a hot spring bath for tourists.

Monkeys

There are monkeys in Aomori.  They live the farthest north of any living primate except for humans.  They are famous for gathering food from the beach since they don’t get enough food in the forest.  If you see them and they think that you have something to eat they may attack you, so be careful.
